How to fix a laptop charger that heats up fast

To do activities using a laptop, we definitely need a charger. As we usually do, we need to recharge every time the battery runs out.

Causes of Hot Laptop Chargers and Easy Ways to Overcome

Without the presence of a charger, our laptop computer may not be useful at all. If the battery 'drops' and we don't bring a charger, we can't do anything on our laptop computer.

When we do the process of charging (charge) on a laptop, try occasionally to hold the charger adapter. Is it warm? Or even hot?

Each hot temperature released can be an indication of whether the charger has a problem or not.

If after holding it feels warm, then the adapter can still be said to be normal. That's only natural, because that's how it should be, the adapter that is connected to a power source will definitely receive heat.

You need to do further checking, then estimate the level of reasonableness of the temperature.

If you use a laptop for a long time, the temperature on the charger adapter will usually increase because it holds a lot of power. Please check the adapter yourself, most of them will have to enter and output descriptions. To enter itself, it means the incoming power from the wall outlet to the adapter, while the output is the power from the charger adapter to the laptop.

So, the longer you use the laptop, the hotter the temperature on the charger adapter.

But sometimes the charger feels very hot, to the point that it even makes our skin turn red after holding it. If this happens, it could really be damaging to some components.

Causes of a Laptop Charger that overheating Fast and How to Overcome it

A. Causes of Hot Charger

1. Damage to Laptop Charger Adapter

This component called the adapter actually has a function to withstand excess power from the power source and drain power as needed.

If we use the charger for too long, the charger will usually feel warm. However, if the heat is too hot, there may be damage to the components inside the adapter.

The damage that occurs usually lies in the transformer (transformer) or smaller components such as transistors, capacitors, or diodes.

2. Damage to Charger Connector

The cause of the laptop computer charger being hot, which in turn may be due to damage to the charger connector. If the connector that functions as a connector between the charger and the laptop computer has problems, it can cause the charger adapter to heat up.

The charger connector generally has metal/copper pins, this part is often damaged.

If the connector is not correct, the power supply to the laptop computer will be disrupted. The output power is eventually returned to the adapter. This can cause an anomaly in the electric current, causing the charger adapter to heat up.

3. Overvoltage and Supply

Try once in a while you look at the sticker on the adapter. You need to check the maximum voltage.

If the maximum voltage for your laptop computer charger is 220 Volts, then it is better if the voltage used is 220 Volts. If it exceeds that, for example 240 Volts, it may still be tolerated and can be used as usual.

However, laptop computer adapters can heat up faster and may shorten the life of the charger.

4. Specifications & Incorrect Charger Quality

Many people underestimate this one thing, even though it is quite important to pay attention to.

If you are using an original laptop computer charger (original charger), then there is no need to worry. The problem is using a laptop computer charger that is not the original default (universal charger). Sometimes the values and information contained on the sticker are not necessarily correct or maybe the quality of the components does not meet the minimum standards.

In some cases, the charger adapter can become very hot after being connected to a power source for 2-3 hours. In other cases, it even smells like burning wires and emits smoke. Finally the charger is damaged and can not be used anymore.

In this case, the use of prevalent chargers can have a negative impact on the battery or laptop computer being used.

Even so, there are still some regularly occurring chargers that are of the same quality and performance as the authentic chargers that were previously used.

B. How to Overcome a Hot Laptop Charger

Inspection:

- Check the laptop battery, whether it gets a power source when the charger adapter is connected or not.

- Meanwhile, if there is no power charged, there may be interference with the laptop computer or adapter.

- To find out the next cause, try checking the end of the charger that is connected to the laptop. Also check other components such as metal pins on connectors.

- Use a multimeter to measure the voltage on the charger adapter. If the voltage is very low, the problem may indeed lie with the charger adapter itself.

- After that, remove the laptop computer battery and try to operate it with an AC charger adapter. Check the condition of the charger again. If it's still hot, there may be an indication that the charger adapter is damaged or the voltage is too high.

- You must also use an AC charger adapter that is compatible with your laptop computer (the voltage is right). Do not use another computer laptop charger because it is very risky.

- Try to replace it with another laptop computer battery or charger. Then check again, after that concludes what the real cause is.

Next step:

- If you already know the cause, try to repair your charger. If you can't / can't, replace your laptop computer charger with new and quality one. If possible, look for the original.

- Although it is more expensive, it is certainly safer and more durable than a universal charger.

That's all from me, I hope it's useful.
